Heartbreaker

A little slow on the posts of late as photography work has taken up most of my time. And I’m moving apartments today (from the Financial District to the West Village) so this might be the last post for a few days. I’m actually sitting in my apartment waiting for the movers, so I thought I’d get in a quick entry before they arrive and tear down the place. I also need to put in a tribute to my man Michael Jackson.

But today we’re covering MSTRKRFT’s new track, ‘Heartbreaker’, featuring John Legend. For those of you not acquainted with MSTRKRFT, they are an electronic duo from Canada, mainly known for their kick ass remixes. They have put out two albums, the latest of which, ‘Fist of God’, was released this past March. ‘Heartbreaker’ is a track off of the album with a completely different sound than typical MSTRKRFT fare, and by that I mean soft, not distorted and syncopated electro beats. It’s more dance with rock than the other way around as it used to be, and Legend’s voice brings a nice soulful, R&B flavor to the song. The track even has ballad like pianos. The video is pretty funny too, about a guy who likes a sales clerk girl.

Remix Volume I

Originally posted on June 3, 2008

I’ve been absent from these pages the last few days as I’ve been pretty busy moving out of my apartment, but I have some excellent remixes for all of you that I just discovered. These are tracks that’ll definitely get you up, out of your recliner and to the nearest dance floor.

The first three are remixes of Chromeo songs. Chromeo is already superbly refined, original, making addictively fun moving dance tracks, it’s hard to imagine adjusting them in any way. And truth be told, many a time one comes across some really rubbish remixes, and I’ve come across plenty of those for Chromeo. But these definitely do them justice, add some color, have a little twist and serve up something new.

Chromeo - Bonafied Lovin’ (LA Riots Remix)

Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (Laidback Luke Remix)

This is an interesting one; Hot Chip does a very Hot Chip like remix of the Stone’s ‘I’m Free’.

The Rolling Stones - I’m Free (Hot Chip Remix)

Tronik Youth is a catchy electro/new wave group. Check them out at myspace. They do a decent remix of MGMT’s ‘Time To Pretend’. Speaking of MGMT, they’re playing McCarren Pool July 27th, also with the Ting Tings.

By now everyone knows Justice’s ‘We Are Your Friends’, their infamous remix/reworking of Simian’s ‘Never Be Alone’ that garnered them a lot of fame and acclaim. This track I believe is a remix by Etienne de Crecy of Erol Alkan’s remix of ‘We Are Your Friends’. I’ve also put the Erol Alkan remix, which I prefer.

The following is one of my favorites. It’s a remix of the Beastie Boy’s ‘Intergalactic’ by Yellus. I love ‘Intergalactic’ and this remix disects and adds a lot to the song, makes it more danceable, much more electro house, slightly grinding/jarring in the style of Justice, it’s good.

Beastie Boys - Intergalactic (Yellus Remake)

And lastly, Justice’s remix of Franz Ferdinand’s ‘The Fallen’, titled ‘Ruined By Justice Remix’, as they stripped away most of the music, left drum beats and their syncopations. There is a sped up version of this, which I prefer, but I can’t find an mp3 format of it, so unfortunately cannot share.

Got Love To Kill

‘Got Love To Kill (MSTRKRFT Remix)’ by Juliette & The Licks. Firstly, I have no idea where I got this song from, it just appeared magically on my playlist, but I’m glad it did. Secondly, first things first. Juliette & The Licks is a band fronted by actress Juliette Lewis. Yes, when celebrities decide to make music it usually goes awry, but in this case, I think Ms. Lewis has got something going. The sound of the group is fast paced rock with a little punk thrown in. They’re trying to produce a rebellious sound, which they do manage to achieve, and Lewis’ raspy voice tightens the rock n’ roll debauchery sound the group is going for. It’s also worth noting that on their most recent album, Four On The Floor, David Grohl guest stars on drums, which probably makes a huge difference on the record. Don’t forget he was drumming for Nirvana before leading The Foo Fighters.

My favorite track of theirs, and probably the only one I would listen to consistently, is ‘Got Love To Kill’. It’s slightly different than their other material, a little less punk, but no less fast, and a little more new wave. And rather than screaming, Lewis sings with a loud whisper. The original song is great, but MSTRKRFT turns it into a rock/dance/electro hybrid. Though as much as I love MSTRKRFT remixes, I’m slowly starting to realize that most of their tinkerings sound the same; loud, distorted electronic guitar ploughing through the song, re-playing a vocal piece that consists of something like ‘yeah yeah’ and a thumping house beat. It always sounds good though.
