New MGMT, No Good

So MGMT released the first single off of their upcoming and much anticipated second album, ‘Congratulations’. ‘Flash Delirium’ is the track and it’s pretty crap. I usually wouldn’t post a song on this blog that I don’t like but figured new MGMT material was noteworthy. Though to be fair, the group did state that the new record won’t have any pop singles like ‘Kids’ or ‘Electric Feel’, but will delve further into the more psychedelic sounds like the latter part of ‘Oracular Spectacular’. ‘Flash Delirium’ will be a pretty close taste to how the new album feels. Too bad. Well, at least the album art is done by Low Brow artist Anthony Ausgang.

Yeasayer

I should’ve posted about Yeasayer a long time ago, but alas, I think I only end up posting less than 15% of what I listen to. But tonight my sister, Natasha, was listening to Yeasayer so it reminded me to put them up. Yeasayer is a band from Brooklyn that released their debut album, ‘All Hour Cymbals’, in 2007 but gained rapid attention last year. They fall into the same sound as MGMT, but less electronic and more folk. In fact they describe their music as ‘Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel’. My three favorite songs of theirs are below. ‘Tightrope’ being the best in my opinion, probably because it has that nostalgic, introspective feeling.

Remix Volume I

Originally posted on June 3, 2008

I’ve been absent from these pages the last few days as I’ve been pretty busy moving out of my apartment, but I have some excellent remixes for all of you that I just discovered. These are tracks that’ll definitely get you up, out of your recliner and to the nearest dance floor.

The first three are remixes of Chromeo songs. Chromeo is already superbly refined, original, making addictively fun moving dance tracks, it’s hard to imagine adjusting them in any way. And truth be told, many a time one comes across some really rubbish remixes, and I’ve come across plenty of those for Chromeo. But these definitely do them justice, add some color, have a little twist and serve up something new.

Chromeo - Tenderoni (MSTRKRFT Remix)

Chromeo - Bonafied Lovin’ (LA Riots Remix)

Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (Laidback Luke Remix)

This is an interesting one; Hot Chip does a very Hot Chip like remix of the Stone’s ‘I’m Free’.

The Rolling Stones - I’m Free (Hot Chip Remix)

Tronik Youth is a catchy electro/new wave group. Check them out at myspace. They do a decent remix of MGMT’s ‘Time To Pretend’. Speaking of MGMT, they’re playing McCarren Pool July 27th, also with the Ting Tings.

By now everyone knows Justice’s ‘We Are Your Friends’, their infamous remix/reworking of Simian’s ‘Never Be Alone’ that garnered them a lot of fame and acclaim. This track I believe is a remix by Etienne de Crecy of Erol Alkan’s remix of ‘We Are Your Friends’. I’ve also put the Erol Alkan remix, which I prefer.

The following is one of my favorites. It’s a remix of the Beastie Boy’s ‘Intergalactic’ by Yellus. I love ‘Intergalactic’ and this remix disects and adds a lot to the song, makes it more danceable, much more electro house, slightly grinding/jarring in the style of Justice, it’s good.

Beastie Boys - Intergalactic (Yellus Remake)

And lastly, Justice’s remix of Franz Ferdinand’s ‘The Fallen’, titled ‘Ruined By Justice Remix’, as they stripped away most of the music, left drum beats and their syncopations. There is a sped up version of this, which I prefer, but I can’t find an mp3 format of it, so unfortunately cannot share.

MGMT

MGMT is a Brooklyn based band that released their debut album ‘Oracular Spectacular’ digitally in October 2007 and physically in January 2008. The album was produced by David Fridman, best known for his work with the Flaming Lips. The most accurate way to describe MGMT’s sound is probably by classifying it as electro glam. It’s filled with layered synthesizers, distorted drum beats and reverberated vocals. Some of the lyrics are wit filled, poking fun at the Rock N’ Roll lifestyle as they sing on ‘Time To Pretend’, “Let’s make some music, make some money, find some models for wives, I’ll go to Paris, take some heroin and fuck with the stars.” It’s all a little daydream funk.
