Florence + The Machine is a stunningly sounding group, made up of singer Florence Welch and a backing band of various artists. The group, from the UK, released their debut album, ‘Lungs’, in July of this year and it topped up at #2 for 5 weeks. (#1 was occupied by Michael Jackson). Most of the album is about a temporary breakup with Welch’s current boyfriend. The anguish of love really does provide the best literary material.
Florence’s megaphone voice commands the band’s sound of indie soul, garage rock, folk, and Britbeat. My favorite track is ‘You’ve Got The Love’. It starts with a telling silence broken only by Welch’s vulnerable, soul splattered voice, that is soon, gently aided by the plucked strings of a harp. The track picks up speed and sways between stayed melodies and rushed emotions that touchingly showcases this group’s and this woman’s perfect melding of original music, love lorn lyrics and the fragile vox that melds them together.
