Solange

I really like Solange Knowles. Most people would expect that her sound would be very similar to that of her sister’s, Beyonce, but a nice surprise is that it’s completely the opposite. While Beyonce is very pop and dancey, Solange derives her influences from Motown girl groups such as The Supremes, The Chiffons, The Marvelettes, et al. It has that classic style. A track of hers that I love is ‘Would’ve Been The One’. It exudes the beautiful, innocent voice, soft pianos, backup vocals and hand claps of the 50s and 60s. And on a slightly separate note, Edward Van Cleef does a stellar remix of this track, transforming it from the upbeat, innocennt Motown sound to a super sleek, aerodynamic dance floor track. This is a serious, stylish, and futuristic reworking of Solange’s song. I’d play it at any party. It also nicely isolates and thus makes prominent Solange’s pristine voice.
