Embryonic Journey
I had never watched the last 1.5 seasons of Friends, so I borrowed my friend Jocelyn’s DVDs of the last three seasons and sat myself down. Actually, I lost her DVDs the same day I borrowed them, leaving them on the ferry on the way back from her place in West NY to the city. Damn. So I bought them and then watched them. And I had forgotten how funny of a show it was, Ross being my favorite character by far . The episode where he was getting a spray tan and kept messing it up had me rolled over laughing in tears.
I also thought the last season was a very relatable one. All the characters were either getting married, moving out of the city, having children; basically moving onto the next stage of life. And I see that happening with everyone around me; people getting married, having children, moving away. That youthful part of one’ 20s is finishing for the next stage of life, with kids, homes, and marriage. Exciting, yet also sad in a nostalgic sense.
The last scene in the last episode of Friends shows all of the characters walking out of Monica’s apartment for one last coffee at Central Perk, and then a slow span of the empty apartment with no one in it, all the keys on the table and a final shot of the door before the credits role. The song played is Jefferson Airplane’s ‘Embryonic Journey’. It’s an instrumental acoustic played by the band’s guitarist, Jorma Kaukonen, which he created for a guitar workshop. It was included on the band’s second album, ‘Surrealistic Pillow’. The title is fitting to the end of the show, and it’s sound is as well; soft, introspective, and meaningful.
