Don’t You Evah

Spoon rocks. No doubt about it. Besides talent in music, they have great album names and album covers. ‘Don’t You Evah’ is a track off of their sixth album, ‘Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.’ It’s a cover of The Natural History’s song ‘Don’t You Ever’. Spoon’s version is pretty much done in typical Spoon fashion. It’s a mid-tempo track with brushed drums, funky bass lines, and jazzy guitars with stylish pitter-patter of conversation in the recording studio. Spoon released an EP in 2008 of ‘Don’t You Evah’, which featured remixes of the track by various artists. Two really stand out for me.
DJ Amaze & Alan Astor Mix
Faster with scratchier guitars, and a heart breaking, beating, drum line. Some handclaps that don’t seem apropos, but add a flavor for a youthful jaunt on the floor. The dance floor that be. What I like here is the effect done to Britt Daniel’s voice, which sounds scrubbed out and raw. That effect returns this rock turned dance mix back to the indie world. The vocals and the beat become the focal point spruced up with the rapid, flying jazz strums on the guitars.
Diplo Remix
Diplo is really on it these days with his remixes. This remix is so complex, layered, intricate, and comes out as a gem. The sounds are almost difficult to put into words because certain parts that shine seem so trivial yet add to the beauty of the track. Such as when the vocals are cut up and looped into a stutter. Diplo’s version is not fast by any means, in fact it’s rather slow. But it brings with it an elegant nostalgia, a wistful afterthought of youth. It has 80s influenced dynamics, very much so. There is an almost missed wood drumming that brings a bareness to the song which is filled by the distorted, grinding, syncopated, electronic synths Diplo is so well known for. That signature sound melds and molds throughout the track like a thick liquid that brings lushness to the song. As with the DJ Amaze & Alan Astor Mix, the music is subdued when compared to the vocals, which really make the song what it is. Under this diversity of sounds is featured the ever triumphant jazz guitar, which comes off sounding almost like a piano.
