I’ve Been Funny, I’ve Been Cool With The Lines

Rick Springfield’s classic 80s hit, ‘Jessie’s Girl’, has always been one of my favorite tunes, as I’m sure it is for most people from my generation. The song always makes it on to my party playlists. And in senior year of college the song took on a whole new and literal meaning for me in a sort of humorous way that I sadly can’t divulge on these public pages because it’s slightly personal and would be unwarranted.

In any case, the cast of Glee covered it for one of the show’s episodes and I really love their version. It’s a fresh take when the original can get a little tried but at the same time doesn’t deviate from the sound of Springfield’s version. And most noticeably is Cory Monteith’s (Finn) younger voice that does a much better job of conveying the feelings of teen angst of unrequited love than Springfield’s 31 year old voice could do. Even the song subtley shifts to make this change, particularly in the heavier, pounding drums.
