I’m pretty happy to see a new track from the boys in Miike Snow because I love these fellas. ‘Billie Holiday’ is in line with the moody, urgent songs on their debut. I don’t know what it has to do with the jazz singer it’s named after, but either way, it dazzles, glitters and darkly speeds with lush sounds.

More & More Miike Snow

This post goes out to Broken Silence’s #1 fan, Micah ‘The Buckhunter’ Zajic, in an effort to convert him into a Miike Snow believer. The band needs no introduction as they’ve appeared on this blog more than many. Despite loving them and not listening to the entire album as yet, I am continuously and pleasantly assaulted with their music in the most random of places. So two tracks that I just heard from these Swedish, electro splashing guys; ‘In Spite Of’ and ‘Black & Blue’. Both tracks play to the polar aesthetics of the album. ‘In Spite Of’ falls into the moody, foreboding, dark clouded atmosphere of the record while ‘Black & Blue’ fills the bubbling, bright and poppy space of the album. The latter creatively mixes a sunny 60s Brit style a la the Beatles with a touch of British boy bands from the 90s. Two tracks, both different, both great.

Plastic Jungle

Another great track by Swedish poppers, Miike Snow. This one is completely in the other direction for these guys. So far we’ve been served with sweet, summery pop from the group. ‘Plastic Jungle’ is quick, fuzzy, dark, built with a slight razor’s edge on the side.

Animal Remixed

Loving this Peter Bjorn & John mix of Miike Snow’s ‘Animal’. It’s stripped down, raw and sharply accentuates Andrew Wyatt’s vocals. And Andrew Wyatt has some awesome vocals. The mix takes Miike Snow’s airy, sweet, sounds and throws plenty of edge into them.

Peter Bjorn & John are most popularly known for their song ‘Young Folks’, which is kind of sad since they have such incredible output and pretty much most of it is quality. One of my favorite tracks off of their last album, ‘Living Things’, which came out in March is ‘It Don’t Move Me’. A mid tempo track, ‘It Don’t Move Me’ runs with a little urgency. The style of the song is set with a pounding piano intro, followed with drum stutters and a fluid rapidity of sequencers and programmed percussion. The percussion is not hard, not soft, yet it slaps around with affirmation, really driving the sleek, stylistic aesthetic of the song. What really adds greatness to the track is Peter Moren’s vocals. He sings with a cool, nonchalant disposition.
Miike Snow’s mix is amazing. I like it a whole lot better than the original. Though the original is already a pretty solid dance track, Miike Snow adds a ton of dancing juice into this one. They layer wild synthesizers over the entire song, making it more electronic, faster, and jumpy. The verses are pierced with quick shifting synths, and the style they use for this track matches the disaffected, listless style of the vocals. It’s an incredible fuzz and buzz created on keyboards that underlies the back beat of the track, which adds another layer of synth fun. Towards the end the group lets loose with plenty of programming, creating a carnival effect of sounds, loopy, bright, fast.

Miike Snow

Who is Miike Snow? No one really knows. A band/DJ/singer-songwriter/producer? There is no information of Miike Snow on the blogosphere or anywhere else for that matter. This is particularly evidenced by their/his/her/its myspace page, which is a bare minimum of nothing. Regardless of the mysterious anonymity, the music is sublime and being remixed by some of the most preeminent artists of the mixing world, e.g. DJ Mehdi and one of last year’s favorite remixers, Treasure Fingers. The style of Snow’s sound, thus far, is airy, summery, electrofied pop, tinged with an elated nostalgia. Perhaps not so apropos in the middle of bone biting winter, but still elevating nonetheless. I’ve even gone on as far to say that DJ Mehdi’s mix is thus far my favorite track of the year. True, Mehdi is by far one of my favorite artists of all time, but with a detached bias, I still stick to my comment. Give it a listen, you might agree.
